Just watched Jay Chou's "The Rooftop" at Filmgarde, Bugis Plus. Almost couldn't watch it because my friend was suggesting another movie to watch instead; luckily we did - I could do with some light hearted, funny and lovey-dovey genre. And that day I was already mentally prepared for Jay Chou. By the way, I really like Filmgarde seats (Y) -but just that this time I kept feeling ppl kicking my seat from behind grah-

I was glad we did catch it in the cinema because personally I felt the artistic and cool effects could only be properly  experienced in the theatre. It really reminded me of some kind of musical, and to be exact it's like a major drama production being brought onto the big screen! I guess everyone would agree with me the plot is so-so and maybe a little cliche but at the very least i appreciate that the story flow and ending was not too illogical or too idealistic (y'know it's not like those plots that deliberately drop in miracles and turn supposedly sad endings into impossibly happy ones)! And there is kind of a little twist which is unexpected at the end.

What left the deepest impression on me was most probably the projections on Valentine's Day. Because it reminded me of how much conflict we had over this last time in a drama production  and how much trouble it then gave us. I remembered the reason why I was so against it was because I couldn't see our projections adding much value to the show itself.

But seeing the projections in the Jay Chou's movie totally awed me. It was really epic. And I feel it must not have been easy to create this scene, with all the planning, storyboarding, and the execution etc. I wonder if this can be re-enacted onto theatre and drama productions -maybe this is why his movie felt so much like a big-screen theatre play to me.

And the slow songs inside as well - I guess it's kinda his style. My friend was commenting that this movie had all the elements of Jay Chou and I agree.

I'm not really sure what makes a good movie to people. Maybe they feel that this one would be easily forgotten after watching it. However, for someone who rarely steps into the cinema like me, I guess I am just amazed at how he managed to string together and seam  all the elements like the music, dance and martial arts as well as artistic effects into one whole movie like this. Creativity not so much in terms of plot, but in every other areas other than that, you will most probably feel the Jay Chou's style of imaginativeness and artistry.
